Hi, I'm 27 years old and a writer of poetry and fantasy fiction. My poetry is an outlet for my feelings and how I deal with curveballs that life sometimes throws my way. My fiction is a way to create and explore new worlds, as well as live out dreams that cannot be fulfilled in ordinary life.
Some influences on my poetry include the various types of music I listen to... Tori Amos, Patti Smith, Snow Patrol, The Cardigans, Stephen Malkmus, Sufjan Stevens and whatever else catches my interest. Influences on my fiction include many things... many books I've read, many movies and TV shows I've seen. I don't plan to be a Tolkien or a Robert Frost, but I'd prefer to just be me.
The hardest thing about writing is not just getting it on the page. Anyone can do that. But instead... getting down on the page what you want to say, in the way that you want to say it... That's hard. Sometimes it does come easy and then you want to leave it as it is because you're afraid to mess around with it and ruin it. Other times, you have to give birth to it... through the pains of labor and everything else. It can be a long and time-consuming process.
I used to think the best of my writing came right off the top of my head. Now I realize while brainstorming ideas like that is fine, you can't expect what you get to be perfection right from the start. No one wrote the Bible in one sitting. No one who wants to be a serious writer should expect the process to be a quick flick of the pen or a clicking of keys.
Writing is fun and it definitely is one of the most rewarding activities in personal creativity, but it most definitely is not easy. I've learned this the difficult way.
Of what you can read here, most of my early stuff is just that... early, half-formed and very, very much the way clay is when you dredge it up from the riverbed. It can be worked into something better and maybe I might revisit them someday. But truthfully, I'm more concerned with what I'm working on right now. I'm more interested in getting these ideas out of my head instead of putting old ones back in. And, more often than not, those ideas will not come out the same way. They will have been irrevocably changed by my age and experience.
Anyway, enjoy what you read here and I welcome any comments or criticisms you may have. :)
