Horror: The word alters the human condition. It has a way of manifesting itself in many different forms. As a society, we experience fear every day of our lives, usually when we least expect it and have no idea how to handle it. For years I've found something fascinating about how, when faced with certain forms of suspense and tension, whether it being movies or the written word, that we tend to embrace being scared and actually crave it more.
Why you ask? The answer is simple. We want to deal with what makes us tremble on our own terms. We want to be transported into situations that are out of control. That's why people board rollercoasters, jump out of planes, and go bungee jumping. Those are only a few examples of how human beings release, "let go" so to speak. We are a population that thrives on "safe danger" to some extent. Episodes that remind us we're still alive although the blood is rushing through our veins faster than ever before. And when our culture is at the mercy of the filmmaker, or the book in hand, the experience is even more thrilling because when it's over, the audience takes a deep breath and remembers that it's only make-believe.
Years ago I decided to offer my contribution to the dark arts. So, with a whole lot of luck and good timing I wrote an anthology called "Blood Works" and had it published this year. Indeed I've been a very lucky man. My catalogue is growing, and I hope that those of you wonderful readers who I cherish so much will continue to follow my path. It is my intention to write many more eerie tales for the blood- hungry fans; stories that have been buried for too long in the catacombs of my mind.
My name is David Boyle, and I'm attempting to carve out a little place for myself in the vast universe of horror. I am grateful that I have the opportunity to embark on a writing career, and in a genre I'm so fond of. Fulfilling this dream of mine started with acceptance from Arctic Wolf, and will continue as long as the fans will support me, which I hope is forever.
I'd like to add that without you, constant reader, I would be lost in the shuffle. You allow my fiction to exist by reading the works and being affected by them. That is the biggest reward for any writer, and I'm honored you'll give my journeys into the macabre a try.
I want to thank you for listening. And if you're interested keep your eyes open for the horror that's coming your way this year. "Jack Action Films" is shooting my short story "Blindsided" in Canada soon. Visit filmmaker David Jackson at www.myspace.com/jackactionfilms. Also, many of my tales of terror will be popping up at www.9ofswordsmag.com during the course of 2008! Some of them are published there already.
I hope to meet some of you at future signings. :)
