Like his protagonist Jim Gilliam ran away from home and joined the Coast Guard at the tender age of 14.

Background Information

Kenneth Roberts, Jack London, Joseph Conrad, and Herman Melville were just a  few of my greatest writing influences. Please visit my new website and sign my guest book and I will reply as soon as I can.

I was born in Velasco, Texas a small town on the Gulf Coast and raised in the even smaller town of Port Isabel, Texas. Like the protagonist in my first novel Point Deception I ran away from home, lied about my age, and joined the Coast Guard at the tender age of 14. Although my single mom found out about it while I was still in boot camp she agreed to let me stay in providing I obtained at least my high school GED. After leaving the Coast Guard I attended the University of Houston and transferred to Baylor College of Medicine (PA program) graduating in 1974. After graduation I joined the Army as an airborne combat physician assistant. Almost a decade later I left the Army to practice in the civilian sector before finally joining the Navy Military Sealift Command as a civilian mariner physician assistant. I started writing my first novel Point Deception about two years ago during a long deployment at sea. The book was released by my publisher Eloquent Books in November 2009. As most first novels tend to be it started as a fictionalized autobiography. The story soon took on a life of its own; turning into a Coast Guard story in honor of the men and women of the Coast Guard, America's smallest, oldest, and proudest sea service as seen through the eyes of the protagonist Tim Kelly, a likable character with a tortured soul. I retired from the Military Sealift Command on February 27, 2010 and now reside in Warwick, New York where I intend to devote full time to my new career as an author.

I am currently working on a sequel to Point Deception titled The Campeche Reprisal.
SYNOPSIS: Undercover Texas DEA agent Tim Kelly is rescued after seven days of torture at the hands of the ruthless Campeche Drug Cartel; he plans to marry Brenda Conrad the love of his life. When Brenda and her best friend, the daughter of the Governor of Texas, are kidnapped by the Cartel and taken to a secret location in the jungles of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, Tim recruits a local Mayan rebel leader to help him rescue the two women.
Birth Place
Velasco, TX USA

I am a clinical physician assistant by profession. Until my retirement date of 27 February 2010 I was employed by the U. S. Navy Military Sealift Command deployed with the Navy support fleet, mostly to the Persian Gulf.
In my professional career I have published several articles in various professional journals including: The Journal of Clinical Laboratory Science; Achieves of Surgery; and The Journal of The American Academy of Physician Assistants.
By far my proudest accomplishment in the realm of professional writing came when Doctor Cyril H. Wecht, the lead forensic pathologist for the Warren Commission invited me to author a chapter on nurse practitioner and physician assistant law for his annual publication “Legal Medicine 1994”, Butterworth September 1994. He further honored me by republishing my chapter as the solo article for the publication: “Scalpel and Quill” The Proceedings of the Pittsburgh Institute of Legal Medicine, following publication of, “Legal Medicine 1994”. Even though I received an honorarium, I would have done it simply for the prestige of being asked and the joy of seeing my words in print in these two prestigious publications.
I left home just before my fourteenth birthday and joined the Coast Guard four months later. I’ve had my share of exciting experiences upon which my first novel Point Deception is based. I was raised in the same area where a large portion of the current drug violence across the US-Mexican border is now occurring. As an associate member of the Texas Narcotics Officers Association, I am familiar with the history of the ongoing violent drug interdiction operations along the border between Texas and Mexico.
