I started writing as a hobby but became particularly fascinated with an area in Psychology called Identity Achievement.   The Identity achievement task is the one that occurs in late adolescence involving the questions Who Am I and What Am I Going To Do With My Life.  After visiting Hawaii in 1987 I realised that the identity achievement task would be particularly difficult for the multi-racial and multi-cultural population there. I started tracking down Hawaii's history and the result is my five Hawaii Literary Histories. I also have in print a novel about identity achievement in Australia, a novel about First Nations people in British Columbia, a novel about identity issues in Tahiti, one about a Tibetan Buddhist in California and one about identity achievement for a young man with multi-handicaps. As a result my novels, as well as being entertaining, have a strong social conscience. They are written for a purpose.

Birth Place: Vancouver,  Canada

In 2003 my screenplay adaptation of my novel Journey Great Barrier Reef was a winner in the Telluride Indiefest Screenplay contest. It also received Honorable Mention from the 2003 Writer's Digest Writing Competition. I reached the top five percent out of 596 entries in the January 2002 Writesafe "Present-Athon contest for my screenplay "Alias The Tank" and just recently became the Articles person selected for an interview on Authorsden Radio Program for the number of hits on my article "Marquesas Islands."

Recent 5STAR REVIEW for Aloha And MaiTais from MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW Sept. 2/02.  "Aloha And Mai Tais: A Novel About Hawaii In The 1930's and 1940's by Rosemary I. Patterson is a "slice-of-life saga about Atherton and Jessica Scully, two elite people of Honolulu who decide to invest in the Tropical Palace Hotel.  Young love, trouble in paradise (i.e. marriage), wrenching changes inflicted on Hawaiian life and culture by the crush and demands of the tourism industry, as well as the shock of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese are all part of  THIS PICTURESQUE AND MEMORABLE STORY THAT IS THE NEXT BEST THING TO TAKING A VACATION TO HAWAII IN A TIME MACHINE."

The Way of the Supernova
I'm currently working on the second edition of "An End to Innocence." When it's finished another Romance novel will tell about the new, exciting Hawaii that produced Barack Obama. I'm also working on "Healing Khadijah" another humorous novel which will touch on Identity Fracture in Malaysia and Singapore with the incredible rate of change due to Globalization and Modernization.

Additional information

Another recent work is "Kuliano", one of the few historical novels about Kauai in existence. In this novel twelve year old orphan (Kuliano) is taken from Kauai to be an experiment in upward mobility for commoners by a Hawaiian Prince. Despite all odds he escapes. The book also tells the history of the Hawaiian Homes Rehabilitation Act. My Australian Literary History "Journey Great Barrier Reef, is set in Australia. The main protagonists, world famous Aborigine Marine Biologist, Dr. Rebecca Nelson and a Steve Irwin Crocodile Hunter type character, the Outback Reverent Rory McTavish battle a high government official determined to keep the cause of a major Cyanide spill from becoming public. Flashbacks highlight key Aboriginal history. Another of my five Hawaiian Literary Histories "Aloha And MaiTais" is set in 1930's Waikiki and tells the history of Hawaiian music. The main protagonists, Teri'i Komo, a fire dance wannabe from Tahiti and Kimi Kai'ika, a hula dancer from the Leeward Coast of Oahu, take part in Hawaiian entertainment during the wonderful years when Hawaiian music ruled the airwaves. They experience love, heartbreak and Pearl Harbor. "Aloha And MaiTais" recieved a five star review from the MidWest Book Review 09/02 who called the book "memorable, picturesque and the next best thing to taking a vacation to Hawaii in a time machine." My previous Hawaii Literary Histories include "An End To Innocence" (Hawaii history 1964 to 2000) which updates social conditions in Hawaii since James Michener's "Hawaii", "Kuhina Nui" (Prime Minister)about Hawaiian history, 1795-1893) and "Kula Keiki Ali'i" (Chief's Children's School)about Hawaiian history 1840 to 1893). I also have a Literary treatment of Tibetan Buddhist principles with the principles for living and relationships embedded into a romantic comedy involving a wealthy entrepreneur and an activist/folksinger in Orange County. The books title is "Synergy". I also have written an adventure novel about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in an abandoned Institution for the Mentally Challenged ("Alias the Tank" which is the nickname for the "Access Mobility Wheelchair System"). Set in my own back yard of B.C., Canada, the Literary History "Return of the Canoe Societies," is a riveting adventure novel with Coastal First Nations' people paddling a dugout canoe up the rugged coast of B.C. to support Aboriginal land claims. Flashbacks tell the history from 1854. My novel "Mission Mururoa," is set in the spectacularly beautiful Marquesas Island and Tahiti. It is about the dangers of nuclear testing and nuclear weapons as was "On The Beach" by Nevil Shute. In Dec. 2005 I became the Past-President of the Canadian Authors Association-Vancouver Branch after serving for two years as President. In Jan. 2006 I've become a Career Awareness Consultant to the Patterson-Sterling Counselling and Consulting Service in Coquitlam, B. C. but promise to keep writing. Currently underway is a novel about Alaska called: "Alaska Now." I want to update James Michener's impressions of Alaska particularly since the results of the Alaska Native Claims settlement and the rise and success of Native Alaska CEO's of Native Corporations who are now the driving force behind Alaska's economy. I just recently visited Singapore and Malaysia and was amazed at the interacting cultures there. Particularly in Malaysia, three cultures stand side by side. Myriads of temples and Mosques as well as ethnic costumes (Burqas, Saaris, and Chinese pajamas testify to the vibrancy of Hinduism, Chinese Buddhism, and Islam in Malaysia. Also the pace of so-called Modernization is unbelievable. Imagine seeing a woman clad in a full Burqa parasailing behind a speed boat in a seaside resort city in Penang. All that stimulation has me half way through a novel called "Healing Khadijah" where a forest spirit has put a spell on a westernized, Muslim lady for the environmental damage caused by her development husband. Khadijah has retreated to full Purdah, her only words being Muslim prayers and her alumni friends must find a way to break the curse and return Khadijah to the modern world.
