Born in Canada, raised in Iowa and Minnesota, travelled in most states, and settled for 30 years in New Jersey, I have enjoyed a wide geographical experience. My family of origin was conservative Christian which established a deep value-system of love and meaning in my core. That value-system, however imperfectly, has informed my life, practice, and conduct.
I have been deeply impacted by strong models, both male and female, of character and thoughtfulness. Some were people in my life, and many were authors. Serious books have taught me to ponder in a philosophical way. Novels have helped me identify my humanity, and revel in it (or sometimes revile it!). Travel books have sparked imagination, and biographies have inspired my growth. People sharing their ideas...this is what really helps us to help each other.
I have been married all of my adult life to Jan and we have three grown children who have their own families. It is a joy to experience the roller-coaster of life with these beautiful people. Family has given a continuity, a purpose, and a laboratory for my life. For this I am very grateful.
My spiritual life was shaped initially by my parents' devout faith in Christ, and adherence to a certain expression of that faith. My early adulthood included time spent in pastoral ministry, which gave me important experiences in helping others. As I matured, my faith became less institutional and more individual. The continuous exploration and honing of my spiritual outlook is a joy!
My education is in psychology (BA, U of Minn), counseling (MA, Trinity Divinity School), and marriage and family therapy (EdS, Seton Hall U).
