As a child I was lucky enough to have been given unlimited access to books. Through those books I travelled across time and space and, for a time, became those people about whom I read. Though I went through a brief period of rebellion against my artistic parents during which I toyed with the idea of medical school, eventually I gave up the stats classes and dissection kit and turned back to books - writing them, reading them, collecting them, reviewing them, and selling them. My work is influenced by everything - that is one of the joys of being a writer - the world is full of stories and story moments. Nothing is wasted as long as a notebook is close at hand. I am living my dream life - what more could anyone want?

Nikki's books have been nominated for a number of awards including the Sheila Egoff Prize for Children's Literature, the WEstern Writers of America Spur Award, the Manitoba Young Readers Choice Award, the Silver Birch Award (Ontario), the Chocolate Lily Award (B.C.), and the BC2000 Book Award.
