Read often--anything from articles to the classics--absorb as much as you can, and write only when you must.

Background Information

My name is pronounced "Male-e"; I was named after a somewhat-affluent friend of my parents, Melie Manning.  Melie and his wife were unable to conceive a male heir to perpetuate the family name, so he promised my parents a hefty sum if they would name their next son after him.  My parents honored the agreement but Melie died before he could fulfill his promise, thus I inherited his name--a name I detested as a youth because my peers occasionally taunted me, with jeers like:  "Melie is a girl's name!"  However, as an adult, I realized that it is a unique name and I embraced it.  My mother is a farmer's daughter from NC and my father was a retired soldier from RI.  At heart I am a barefooted country-boy from the boondocks  and possibly the only person you know who has picked cotton...which is sure to conflict with the sophisticated/urbane image some of my Readers might have of me.

My fascination with English began at an early age; I learned to spell/read almost before I could construct a proper sentence--actually, I still haven't quite gotten the knack of it!  I began writing poetry in 1975, at age twenty, with an eigth-grade education:  Bored, lonely, thinking about my teenage sweetheart, I decided to write the lyrics for a song.  As an audiophile, I like a variety of music and I enjoyed the creative process so much that I entertained the notion of a songwriting career.  However, several months later, while soliciting feedback on my "song" collection, I heard the words that would change the course of my life, "These aren't songs, they're poems."  Years after publishing a Selected Poems collection I completed a Revised and Enlarged edition entitled "Little Boy Blue."  In fact, the poetry and prose featured on this site are from same.

Additional Information

On at least three separate occasions I "misplaced"—for want of a better word—my manuscript when it was a work-in-progress and had to rewrite the entire collection from memory; and thus some of my best work was lost. In the process of rewriting my collection time and again the poems evolved and became increasingly more refined. The first time I misplaced my work it was exceedingly difficult to recall all of the existing poems and impossible to remember them verbatim, which is yet another reason why the collection took several years to complete. The Proem, Apologia, etc., came much later, after I had sown my wild oats. To quote Jerry Garcia: “What a long, strange trip it’s been.” In the preamble to the Apologia, I implied that the Baconian Theory had been conclusively disproved, but evidently that is not the case at all: Stratfordian and Baconian "Societies" still exist and the authorship controversy will only be resolved after the Resurrection, when the authors can themselves settle the dispute. I welcome constructive criticism and I am open to interaction; I have much to share but even more yet to learn. As a devout Christian I prayed for enlightenment so that I'd not only be able to comprehend the Almighty's Divine Message, but also so that I could share it with others as well and not be the blind being led by the blind and, in turn, mislead others--thereby jeopardizing their salvation in addition to my own. It has been my experience that there are almost as many--if not more--interpretations of scripture (in general) and prophecy (in particular) as there are different denominations. I have the gift of Interpretation, according to my faith, to a much greater extent than the multitude of halfhearted followers I encounter daily. However, I'm not seeking the glory of self-aggrandizement, but rather the glorification of our Heavenly Father; I'm merely a child and His servant, He and His Holy Son, Jesus, alone deserve to be praised and worshipped! I can influence others by my words and deeds--faith without works is dead--but, ultimately, they must choose their own path. Any ability I have is owing to the grace of God and not inherent, my knowledge and understanding of scripture is arrived at through revelation from its source and I therefore refrain from the folly of arrogance. I prefer the medium of writing to spread the Gospel since the printed word can cover far more ground than I could as a Missionary. I'd be hard put to generate an original thought regarding scripture--anyone would--what with the myriad volumes on the topic these past two millenium, by scholars and theologians around the globe; not to mention the often-less-capable, albeit often-more-fervent, Christians throughout Christendom. I rarely preach or proselytize for the same reason Jesus spoke in parables; I refuse to cast my pearls before swine. If I encounter anyone whom I perceive is earnestly seeking the Gospel I will instruct him or her as long as he or she is receptive, which is my true calling and passion. Many are called but few are chosen, and I must practice what I preach lest I forfeit my crown by discouraging the would-be convert; otherwise I keep my own counsel and find refuge in prayer.
