"If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything."-Mark Twain “One is not idle because one is absorbed. There is both visible and invisible labor. To contemplate is to toil, to think is to do. The crossed arms work, the clasped hands act. The eyes upturned to Heaven are an act of creation.” -Victor Hugo "'UBUNTU' in the Xhosa culture means: "I am because we are""

Background Information

Visions of Another Letter

I feel like we’re on the edge of a vowel,
or the skew of a consonant, a revelation.
Of a reason of human obliqueness of being.
That’s why it’s hidden from the world’s light.
Imagine the new words and meanings
a new letter could give us! It would be like
a ‘second sight’, or a ‘third eye’
if it could exist, if … we wished it
into being.

The new letter might sound like an ‘iss’,
or an ‘err’, or a ‘flree’, a speckled nuance of all sounds,
combined into the divine sound
of a God sighing, as if It were dying, since
it would be a Godhead letter, which would guide
the others. I tried, once, to write the sounds of thunder,
still have my notes, and ponder and flounder
in my ineptitude to write thunder’s Voice.
Thunder uses few vowels when it speaks,
it splits infinities with its growls of absolute
power of vibrating sound. I want to be thunder.

I’ve tried to write the fluidity of water
into verse, it doesn’t work to my satisfaction,
which proves my lack is more than obtuseness, or,
does it? I worry about water and its forms and my self.
Water is a word of many actions, of too many
refractions to word-eclipse with my human mind.
Yet, I want to be water.

I’ve tried to write of the travels of wind, but, I couldn’t
fit its enormity into my head, which is much too shallow
to hallow the elemental principle wind supplies with its reign
of invincible dominance of atmospheric adage’s tolerance.
And, as I yearn to be me, I want to be wind.

I’ve tried to write of the authority of sun, wanted to show,
with my desert living, I know who has won its worship
upon this Earth-spaceship. Rah is a vocal commitment
to winners, Ra is a symbol of sinner-seen gods.
Who is wrong? I want to be sun, one day, I will be Sun.

I want to be the one who finds this new letter, that will
make the world better, which will define the divine
into a word that’s heard throughout the primordial
conception of language. I want to live in words.
