Author of a timely character-driven novel which gives an insider’s view on the disappearance of our favorite department stores.

Background Information

Darlene Quinn is an author and journalist from Long Beach, California.

Webs of Power

Quinn’s first published novel, which she titled Sizzling Cold Case, was a somewhat unusual collaboration as well as labor of love for her dear friend, Buddy Ebsen, who passed away on July 5, 2003, at the age of 95. Ebsen’s work-in-progress was a Barnaby Jones novel, which at his widow’s request, Quinn was thrilled to complete. Quinn says she felt as if Buddy was right beside her and would have approved of the creative license his widow allowed her in completing Sizzling Cold Case, which was published in January of 2007.

In addition, she has published articles in both "Inskeeping World" and "Savvy Magazine" highlighting the business knowledge she gained during her time as Corporate Training Director for the Bullock's Department Stores and as Director of Personnel/Organization Development for Bullocks Wilshire (West Coast Divisions of the former Federated Department store conglomerate)

As part of a nine-member management team for the Bullocks Wilshire Specialty Department Store Division, Darlene Quinn has the insider's perspective on the rise and fall of major department stores. Her soon to be released sequel, Twisted Webs, continues the saga of corporate greed and raw human struggles with characters we have come to know and love.

Quinn became interested in storytelling at an early age but did not begin writing until her adult life. Prior to being an author, Quinn was a teacher in the public school system, a self-improvement and modeling instructor, a private contractor for various department stores (Bullock's/Robinson's) and hospitals. She has two children, John and Jodie, six wonderful grandchildren, and happily lives with her husband and greatest supporter, Jack, a restorer of valuable art, in Long Beach, California.

, the first novel of her series, was the Winner of the 2009 National Indie Excellence Award for Fiction and a Finalist for the National Best Book Award for General Fiction. The sequel, Twisted Webs, will be released in September 2010, and she is currently working on the prequel, Irreversible Webs.

Webs of Power
A raw, unsentimental portrayal of greed, manipulation, and relationships set in the excessive, insatiable retail industry of the 1980s. When a hostile takeover of the retail giant Consolidated is announced, the lives of three determined women, each linked to the corporate upheaval, are unexpectedly thrown off course: Paige Toddman's marriage to Consolidated's West Coast Division CEO is threatened when she decides to step out of her fast-paced lifestyle to raise the unwanted child she is carrying, a choice driven by her secret past. The fabric of Ashleigh McDowell's life begins to fray when her fiancé, the president of Consolidated's West Coast Division, moves away and her father figure faces a lawsuit that could wipe out his controlling shares of the company's stock. Vain and power hungry, Viviana De Mornay will stop at nothing to become the wife of the man leading the takeover. Webs of Power is a thrilling real-world drama with dynamic characters who find the courage to drastically reshape their lives in the face of crises and the twists of fate.{Concept: The Devil Wears Prada meets Wall Street}

Sizzling Cold Case
Buddy Ebsen, the beloved Hollywood Icon, was an incredibly talented man, whom I had the good fortune to call my friend. He passed away on July 5, 2003, at the age of 95. Buddy had been working on a Barnaby Jones novel. I was thrilled when Dorothy, his widow, asked if I would complete Buddy’s work-in-progress. Since I assisted him with his first novel and other projects, I was familiar with Buddy’s style, and able to write in his voice. I found this somewhat unusual collaboration an engaging project, as well as a labor of love for a man I very much admired. The actual manuscript was less than 100 pages long, therefore, I needed to add a few words, characters, and sub-plots to craft a novel. However I remained true to Buddy’s concept and felt as if he was right beside me and approved of the creative license his widow allowed. The core story is his, as well as some of the dramatic scenes. And since this was written in Buddy’s (or perhaps Barnaby’s) unique voice, I am no longer certain which scenes came from Buddy’s pen and which were my addition. Sizzling Cold Case is not a ghost written book, nor did the multi-talented actor need one. It was published in 2007.
