“Unprovided with original learning, unformed in the habit of thinking, unskilled in the arts of composition I resolved to write a book” — Edward Gibbon, Author of, — The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire.

Background Information

Murry Handler began his art training in New York City after his discharge from the Navy. He studied under Joseph Kelly at Pratt and Joseph Hirsch at the Workshop School and developed professional advertising and graphic design skills at Franklin Institute of Art. He opened his own design studio in the 1980s, which grew to include a staff of 14 artists and illustrators. Murry's art direction and design frequently won national awards for his clients. His work in design and illustration was cited in the Art Direction Awards for Excellence, Annual Book editions of 1991, 1993, 1995 and 1998.

In addition to his Madison Avenue activities, Murry enjoyed teaching young art students at Parsons School of Design and the Fashion Institute, where he held the position of Adjunct Professor.

Additional Information

ALMOST A JEW: ONE MAN'S SEARCH FOR GOD. "Almost a Jew" offers readers gripping personal traumas, as well as the growth of a philosophy that stretches the boundaries of "memoir". Murry’s personal search for God is a story that speaks to all of us. The author paints a riveting picture of a boyhood in a small New England town in the 1930’s and 1940’s, in a three generational Jewish household. The book is rich with details and a lifestyle now long gone. The Catholic Church played a role in his youth that left him with guilt about killing their God. As a child, he had no idea what they were talking about. As he read and understood, as the church changed its message, they freed not only their own but him, a Jew, as well. Murry deals with his sons' devastating illnesses and successes. Lowell Handler, author of Twitch & Shout: A Tourretter's Tale, and Associate Producer of the Emmy nominated film of the same name; and Evan Handler, actor and author of Time On Fire and It's Only Temporary- The Good News and The Bad News of Being Alive, is the survivor of acute leukemia.
