In a time when schools are failing our children, especially African Americans, could it be that taking a careful look at schools, including schools attended solely by African Americans that were effective in the past, provide insight into why schools are failing today and empower the eductional system to operate schools without failures?
One such school, worthy of examination , is the Fields School  a school in Rural Alabama without failures - which served African American children from 1933-1949. Over three-quarters of the sample subjects attending this school had completed a bachelor's degree. Of these, over half,  had completed some graduate work, one-third had master'sdegree, one a doctoral degree and one a law degree.
The Fields School has been meticulously researched. The researcher noted that The Fields family and school appear to have inculcated in its members both a strong sense of autonomy and self-definition, which propelled them to achieve measurable successes in their educational occupational, and life pursuits. All of them seem to have avoided the pitfall of  "logofixion", or becoming damaged by the expectations and words of the larger society that tend to cast minority group members in stereotypical roles of society's victims or society's romanticized noble ones. ..They were and are able to live in two worlds, with a minimum of conflict, and gained cultural competence in a black and white world, in the community of their origin and the society at large.

This is a novel in the guise of the recollections of a grandpa, born into slavery, narrated to his grandson that reveals the lived history of his ancestors as told to him by his mother dating back to 1776 when two of his grandparents were kidnapped in Africa and enslaved in America. This is also the story about how Grandpa and his half brother, also born into slavery, established the Zeals Community and the Zeals School in a hamlet in the South, where they were born and lived all the years of their lives and where for several generations many of their descendatns were nurtured. The legacy of these brothers continues to inspire their descendants to live productive and dignity-affirmed lives. In "Grandpa Benjamin" Uriah J. Fields has created a legendary figure, a man equipped to stand beside William Faulkner's Dilsey in "The Sound and the Fury." Grandpa Benjamin, like Dilsey has 'endured,' has seen almost everything and foretold the rest. The author was the originial secretary of the Montgomery Improvement Association that directed the Montgomery Bus Boycott. He declares that only an insider who felt the pulse and shared the collective agony of those boycotting buses in Montgomery can give an eye-witness account of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. In this book the author gives that account. The 382-day long bus boycott led to the Supreme Court's decision outlawing segregation on Montgomery buses and the return of African-Americans to riding buses in Montgomery on a desegregated basis. The Montgomery Bus Boycott contributed to the passage of the civil rights legislation by the Congress that granted African-Americans the right to vote, equal employment opportunities and access to open housing. The author was there, in Montgomery. Read his first-hand account for the full and true story of the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

A Special Review
This is a good book for persons who want additional information about what really happened in Montgomery over 50 years ago. It may seem as though there might be enough books written about the Montgomery Bus Boycortt, however, the author of this book was intimately involved in the beginning as he served as the first secretary of the Montgomery Improvemnt Association (MIA). Uriah J. Fields begins his book in a way that others have not, by giving accolades to Edgar D. Nixon as the person who truly moved the efforts of the boycott forward and served to keep the organization together and focused on its initial mission. In addition, Mr. Fields states that it was E. D. Nixon who encouraged Dr. King to stay the course when Dr. King seemed most discouraged with the antics of th day. Of course there were others such as Rev. Ralph David Abernathy, Rev. A. W. Wilson and fourteen others who helped to organize and invigorate the Montgomery Improvement Association.

Uriah J. Fields was pastor of Bell Steet Baptist Church, one of the bombed churches, during the boycott. Rev. Fields validates, as well, two other titles written prior to this book, "Bearing the Cross" by David Garrow and "The Papers of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Vol III", as titles which, in his opinion, come closer to telling the truth of what happened over 50 years ago in Montgomery, Alabama. He writes that "only an insider who felt the pulse and shared the collective agony of those boycotting buses in Montgomery can give an eye-witness account of the Montgomery Bus Boycott". "Inside the Montgomery Bus Boycott -- My Personal Story" is that account. As the citizens of Montgomery close out the observance of the 50th anniversary of 382 days of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, I find this tome a must read. I totally enjoyed this book and feel that my life has been enriched by it (or at least I know a little more about that time).
