In 2011 Author Donan Berg was selected to be both a national and a regional writing contest judge for unpublished novel manuscripts in genres of romance and young adult fiction. His new blog, launched September 2011, offers whimsy, writing tips, and more at www.abodytobones.blogspot.com .
Of his debut murder mystery, A Body To Bones, a 2010 Writers's Digest judge wrote the novel's writing presented clear, readable prose with a winning character in Sarah Hamilton enticing the judge to continue reading to learn Sarah's destiny. "Winning plot," said another national reviewer. Additional reviewers rated the novel as outstanding and a novel to be purchased for gifting.
His two novel-length manuscript entries, "Rosemary's Awakening" and "Alexa" landed in the winner's circle of the Fifth Annual Dixie Kane Memorial Contest sponsored by the Louisiana Chapter of the Romance Writers of America. See, news story with greater detail.
From Author Berg's perspective, if one's road to adventure is littered with dirty martini glasses, old-fashioned chick-lit, and music without a dance beat, then you've passed him somewhere in history, or if truth be told, he's not left the car dealership. There's no mystery on superhighways with blurred scenery. For him, life's mystery breathes along the back roads, the ones with gravel ruts, the forgotten building, the sedan that missed the tow truck, shadows in the tree copse or cemetery on a moonlit night, a yelp of the distant animal getting closer, a human skeleton, numerous smashed dreams that leave no visible clue, implausible dreams fueling kindred spirits, wishful dreams never acted on, forgotten dreams.
If one's train car to adventure is without purpose except self-gratification, then he's still standing on the station's wooden platform with the guy in the funny suit and hat holding a watch on a chain. Past the friend and family bestowed kindness and favors too often taken for granted by most, exist goals with meaning, a smile to a child taking a first step, a hand to help up the youthful heart who remembers childhood seventy years ago, a heart filled with charity, a spirit dedicated to all.
If one's rocket to adventure blasts off from this earth, then he's still in Houston or Huntsville not willing to join the sci-fi crowd. He would've added sci-fi to the first list, but since that would have put it next to chick-lit he didn't in any way wish to imply chick-lit readers, mostly gorgeous, independent, and successful women, were spacey. He'd rather breathe without carrying an oxygen tank on his back, eat food not miniaturized in foil packets, keep orientated with head above feet, touch skin in a handshake, not be fearful of creatures with scarred faces, not try to divine the origins of characters who exhibit partial animal genes, not strap on a personal bathroom.
If the above doesn't fulfill or satisfy all you want to know, here's the promised biographical stuff. He's changed the point of view to let the behind the scenes narrator tell you what he/she believes important.
Born in Ireland, Donan Berg combined formal United States elementary, high school, and university education with a cultural heritage of Irish homelife. It flourished side-by-side with a relished multi-cultural neighborhood.
His employment journey mirrored and broadened the multi-cultural upbringing with stints as a journalist, corporate executive, and lawyer. With a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Minnesota, a call from Uncle Sam [actually a letter, remember those!], he returned to the University of Minnesota to earn a Juris Doctor degree.
He's never forgotten his nineteen months in the Republic of Korea, highlighted by eight months as the official United Nations Command reporter for the peace talks at Panmunjom. Prior to Korea he'd been awarded the Army Commendation Medal at the U.S. Army Recruiting Comand Headquarters, Hampton, VA, for his revitalization of its recruiting magzine.
His goal remains to visit the four states he's not physically set foot on. These being Alaska and the three uppermost northeastern states. (Note: He'll accept any reader group invite that would justify his visit to a bed and breakfast in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine or any igloo in Alaska.)
The magnet on his refrigerator quotes Jeremiah 29:11-12, paraphrased: God's plan is to have you prosper and not be harmed. Donan Berg's often quoted as saying may you be so blessed.
He had considered himself destined to labor in math and engineering until the instructors started mixing in the alphabet with the mathematical numbers.
