I was born into words by two great souls, George and Catherine Ashuntantang. These two human beings poured into my DNA the curiosity to find the world and be found by it . In the course of this curiosity I earned a Ph.D. in English and I am now a professor of English at Hillyer College, University Of Hartford, West hartford USA. But I enter my essence when I climb the stage or move infront/behind cameras or caress my computer keyboard. As an actress, filmmaker and creative artist I seek to enter a dialogue with God and his universe. Of course certain writers/works continue to shape and influence my words:
The Bible- This remains a source of strength, and the ultimate fountain of pure poetry.
Chinua Achebe- For his craftsmanship in weaving words into a tapestry of beauty and wisdom. I adore his brain.
Niyi Osundare- I borrow his poetic eyes to see my world
William Wordsworth- I still believe that poetry is "the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" or "Poetry is the breath and finer spirit of all knowledge; it is the impassioned expression which is in the countenance of all Science." (from Lyrical Ballads, 2nd ed., 1800)
Ama Ata Aidoo- For Changes, so I can accomodate changes...
Ethelbert Miller- for writing from the deep corners of the soul
Nawal El Sadawi- for conviction...because I refuse to be a woman at point zero!
