When I was growing up I was strongly influenced by Dr. Seuss because he had such an uncanny talent for telling a story through rhyme. He was my older brother's favorite author and I enjoyed hearing him recite the lively words of 'Cat in the Hat' and 'Green Eggs and Ham'. Later, I was influenced by the illustrations of Maurice Sendak. I knew that when I began to write and illustrate, my vision would be a grand mixture of both authors and hence, Rooster Went a Walkin' was born. While still in college I took an education course involving the study of children's literature. This class helped me see the importance and value in exposing children to really good literature. I knew that when I started writing, the quality of the piece would be of utmost importance and I would always strive for literary excellence first and commercial appeal second. Finally as an educator, I have always tried to expose my students to the highest quality of literature available and will always hold their best interests at heart as I continue to mold young minds with a love for reading!
