Betsy Murphy has worked in hospice care for 25 years. She worked for a large metropolitan area hospice serving in both administrative and direct patient care roles. For seven years of her tenure, she was a regional vice president and developed relationships in her community that rapidly increased the hospice census. Betsy was awarded the county’s “Outstanding Woman” award twice by her county’s Commission on Women, for outstanding contributions in the areas of improved pain management in nursing homes and for developing a children’s grief camp.
For seven years, Betsy worked in marketing and business relations, focusing on increasing access to hospice care for underserved populations. When Betsy served on the local board of the Alzheimer’s Association for 11 years, she developed educational materials designed to help families of patients with dementia choose hospice care. Betsy also served for four years on the End of Life Committee for the American College of Nurse Practitioners. She developed educational materials to be used in private practice with prospective hospice families to encourage earlier referral to hospice care. As an experienced clinician and writer, Betsy consults for hospices offering her expertise in the areas of clinical due diligence and training to improve both documentation and care. Betsy is a registered nurse with over 35 years of nursing experience. She was trained as a nurse practitioner and is certified as a hospice and palliative care nurse. She is widely published in nursing journals and a frequent speaker on end of life care. Betsy is committed to hospice access, hospice nurse education and quality. In 2006, she wrote the first chapter on end of life care in FA Davis and Company’s textbook Understanding Medical Surgical Nursing. Also in 2006, she wrote and published a handbook for consumers entitled Guide to Caregiving in the Final Months of Life.
