I studied fiction under Smith Kirkpatrick at the University of Florida. Smith was himself a student of Andrew Lytle, one of the original Fugitives who wrote I'll Take My Stand, and thus the influence of the New Critics upon my writing - and upon my critical approach to the writings of others - has been significant. Smith passed away in 2008, and essays by his former students (including one of my own)memorializing what he meant to them, as a teacher and a friend, can be found here.
I have written a novel, The Last Good Woman, a number of stories, and have published articles with Touchstone Magazine: A Journal of Mere Christianity, at Orson Scott Card's Ornery.Org website, and at The New Pantagruel, a now defunct online literary magazine.
I am currently co-editor of another online literary journal called The Christendom Review.
