I spent the years from second grade (age 6) through high school (age 17) and beyond living overseas. My father was a State Department diplomat and because of his job, my six brothers and I lived in Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, Thailand and Ethiopia. These were my formative years and have colored everything I have done and written since.
My first book, a novel, titled "Trail Magic: Lost in Crawford Notch" is about a 14 year old girl coming to terms with being responsible for babysitting a 4-year old who becomes lost in the wilderness that surrounds her family's campground. While on the surface this seems to have nothing to do with living overseas, but in fact, the girl's family has recently returned from overseas and ttheir adjustment adds a layer to the complications of the search and rescue and the community's response to the event.
My second book is an autobiography, titled "The Sullivan Saga: Memories of an Overseas Childhood", and is a memoir of the years we lived and traveled overseas, ending with my father's untimely death in Ethiopia of Blackwater Fever, a virulent form of malaria. While many of the stories are humorous, the book highlights the adaptability of children to cultures other than our own, and the fortitude and courage of parents trying to raise children to be good citizens of the world as well as good Americans overseas.
