Most of you know me by my name "Jamal Arrington" but as the pen name states I am Aqil Salil. Well, pretty much I was born in a small town (Bradenton, Florida). Like many others I was born into a dys-functional family. My only outlets were music and writing. Growing up, I despised poetry. I didn't understand meters, scheme and most of the poetic "lingo." As I grew older I realized the music I listened to, the way I felt, and the thoughts in my head were my poetry. It made me feel alive to write. I don't write for myself all the time, I understand how life can sometimes kick an already fallen soldier. I recently became homeless and it has taken every ounce of spirit in me to continue doing what I do. My goal is to inspire, to relate, and to portray a broken people. So that I may be the wornout tool that rebuilds the things that you gave your life to.
I recommend that everyone learn and recite daily
- If by Rudyard Kipling
- Dreams by Lanston Hughes
- The Bridge Builder by Will Allen Dromgoole
- The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost
- Desiderata by Max Ehrmann
I had a therapist/mentor who gave me these poems and I can't forget them. They remind me everyday of what to strive for.
