Gene started writing in his 20's ("with some really terible Lovecraftian horror fiction") and has continued ever since. Though his chief success has been in juvenile fiction, he has also self-published two essay collections dealing with local natural history. He is a former junior high school science teacher, bookseller, landscaper and Instructional Specialist with the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension.
Major literary influences include James Thurber, E.B. White, Kurt Vonnegut, Roald Dahl, Franz Kafka, Albert Camus, J.R.R. Tolkien, Ray Bradbury and Henry David Thoreau (though not necessarily in that order). Other more recent writers he enjoys include Magnus Mills, Steven Millhauser, and Rick Bass.
