I've always enjoyed writing but did not plan on writing a book until 2004, when I re-read my journals from back in the day when I almost died due to depression and ultimately bipolar syndrome, which I live with quite well, thanks very much! From that came my first book, Bipolar by Koehler. I have given many talks since the book came out to try and help those who suffer from brain illnesses and their loved ones to live with it.
My second book Benjamin the Road to Capernaum, was a historical novel and came as a result of working with kids with disabilities and wanting to define the crippled biblical charector in Mark 2. I subsequently tried to write a movie script out of it, and failed miserably. It is a great story, but I'm not the guy to write the script, an artform I do not master.
Third book was My Inflatable Heart, a collection of short stories about my time working with the same kids with disabilities, and attempting to express the life changing stories I lived with them.
I write because I must, and as an artistic expression of self. Society tends to forget that writers are artists, no different than painters or sculptors. We must create first to please ourselves by expressing our inspirational thoughts into words that can be read and will, hopefully, inspire others.
Now I publish to help give writers the right to write. To help them feel that their work is worthy of sharing with the world, even if they only print 50 copies and give it to their friends and family. This is immensely satisfying for me, and I thank God for this new gift I have to share with the world.
