An author with wide-ranging interests: underground buildings to space travel!

Background Information

I’ve always loved learning, teaching, and sharing knowledge through the written word. Professional organizations have helped me strengthen my skills and learn from the experiences of other writers. I belong to the Construction Writers Association, SouthWest Writers, and the New Mexico Book Co-op. My husband and daughters give me enthusiastic support when I am working on a project, comforting solace when I get discouraged, and companionship in celebration when I complete a milestone.

Birth Place
Dodge City, KS

After several years of active participation in SouthWest Writers, I received the Parris Award, the organization’s highest honor, in recognition of having produced a body of work, given help and encouragement to other writers, and provided service to the organization.

Since writing Underground Buildings: More than Meets the Eye, I have spoken at a dozen conferences about earth-sheltering as a sustainable building strategy. I am certified as a Green Building Technical Professional.

I am a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the National Space Society, and the Historical Society of New Mexico.

Additional Information

I have written six books: Arab American Biography (UXL Press, 1999) Arab American Voices (UXL Press, 1999) Underground Buildings: More than Meets the Eye (Quill Driver Books, 2003) From Skyscrapers to Superdomes: Forces in Balance (Newbridge Educational Publishing, 2005) Out of this World: New Mexico’s Contributions to Space Travel (Rio Grande Books, 2011) Space Pioneers: In Their Own Words (Rio Grande Books, 2014)

Underground Buildings: Architecture & Environment explores specific examples of underground buildings and examines concerns like environmental issues, energy efficiency, security, psychological resistance, and safety. It includes a listing of new earth-sheltered building projects in the United States.

Out of this World in 80 Years
Since 1930 New Mexico has been contributing to the development of space travel and now is at the forefront of commercializing space flight. This site gives insights into how the state fostered the evolution from Robert Goddard’s development of liquid-fuel rockets to Richard Branson’s space tourism flights and other activities at Spaceport America, the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport.

Space Pioneers in Their Own Words
Meet those who made it happen: Without their imagination, determination, sense of adventure, and skill, we would not have ventured beyond our home planet.
