The motivations behind the story of Sequence 77 began with a small seed of thought planted in my mind nearly twenty years ago. Since then, the theme, characters and situation took on a life all their own. They gnawed, pushed and sometimes clawed at me until I relented and began writing them down.
As a school psychologist, I've encountered a vast array of children, adolescents, parents and school staff. I've learned that everyone comes from a unique place, which may or may not be much like the one I come from.
Rigidity and fear of the unfamiliar is often what keeps us from taking the necessary steps into making positive connections with others who may be different than we are. If we don't push ourselves to step into new places and experiences now and then, we end up in comfortable, but often stagnant homogeneous groups that rarely challenge us or add significantly to our being.
The story of Sequence 77 highlights one possible scenario for humanity if stagnation and acceptance of an intolerant norm is left unchanged for too long. It would be far better if we moved forward collectively than have the powerful few decide for us all when it is time for change.
I look forward to great discussion and friendships as part of the Author's Den.
