One of my mother’s favorite sayings (as I was growing up) was that there are a lot of different kinds of people in the world and you have to get along with them. She usually said this when I was not doing well at getting along. With an over-sized sense of “play fair” combined with four older brothers with senses of “might makes right” and “oldest rules,” I struggled from the start.
We moved several times. We traveled a lot. I was exposed to a hefty variety of people and situations. I continued to struggle with my internal sense of right and my external experiences. Gradually, gradually, I began to work it out. Since this issue is at my core, it naturally comes out in my writing.
