Mary has lived in Great Britain, the Caribbean and now resides on Kauai in Hawaii. She has written since her teens but more seriously since about 1990. Influences include Ernest Hemingway because his stories reflected his own depression and taught her about how writers themselves can be seen in the stories they write. Also John Steinbeck for his descriptive style and Joyce Carol Oates because she understands not only the psychology of a story but particularly the psychology of the minds of the characters she creates.
Birth Place: Sacramento, CA USA
Accomplishments: Mary is a Pushcart Prize nominee. Her thriller, River Bones, was a winner in the Eric Hoffer Book Awards competition and a finalist in the Indie Excellence Book Awards. Previously published award winning poetry, short stories, photos, essays, letters, gag lines and recipe/stories. Her feature screenplay, Sea Storm, made Semi-Finalist in the 2003 Moondance International Film Festival competition.

| Mary and her company, Mele Publishing doing business as Starving Writer's Reprieve, previously conducted two international writing contests with a $1,000 Grand Prize awarded in each. She has written a feature screenplay titled "Sea Storm," adapted from "Child of a Storm," the first story in her novel, "The Tropics." Her next novel, "The Ka," is a paranormal Egyptian fantasy about a newly discovered tomb containing hieroglyphs coded with magic and spells predicting a future living heir for Tutankhamon. "River Bones," a thriller, takes place in her home town area of the Sacramento River Delta. "Down to the Needle," set in a fictitious coastal area in California, is also a thriller, finished, and ready for publication. With four novels completed, she is presently concentrating on finishing the nonfiction about her mother, who was a singer/musician with a great sense of humor. She maintains a growing list of story names, plots and outlines for novels and short stories as she conjures them. Her intention is to write them all. Mary has decided to write another mystery which will take place in the Hawaiian Islands. It is to ge a sequel to River Bones, with Sara Mason, the heroine from that story solving a cold case in the Islands. |
