John Gabrian Marinescu and his wife Angela. arrived in United States, 25 years ago from Romania, searching for a real freedom. After that, he planned on writing an art book about Eastern European folk designs and culture.

Background Information

John Gabrian Marinescu was born in Ploiesti, Romania. Hi is graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology with a degree in Textile/Surface Design. He currently does design work for many central New York area organizations as well as organizations in Europe. He is a member of the Textile Designer Guild and Surface Design Association and has exhibited in the United States, France, England, Germany and Romania. The Eastern European costume in general and the Romanian costume in particular can be considered monuments in every sense of the word. They should not be relegated to the sociological or etnography department of clothing but can be compared to the Egyptian pyramids, the French cathedrals and the Dutch dikes. They are entitled to this distinction as they are enduring proof of the existence of a well-knit civilization. They are one of the most visible and tangible testimonies of the village civilization in all of Eastern Europe. The costume design and motifs of Eastern Europe and in particular Romania take us beyond the domain of art and carry us into the domain of history.

Additional Information

In the year 2003, Schiffer Publishing Ltd. company (Schifferbk@aol.com, www.schfferbooks.com), published "Eastern European Folk Designs", John Gabrian Marinescu's book. The entire book, is filled with more than 288 full color, all-over patterns, borders and corners of decorative textile motifs from Romania. The orderly presentation of designs will be a valuable resource for textile historians and designers, fashion designers, interior and achitectural designers, and folk art enthusiasts. These timely designs will be used over and over as inspiration for decorations of fabrics, wall coverings, carpets, ceramics, historical ornamentations, and jewelry. "As an American textile designer, but originaly native to Romania, I had long planned on writing an art book about Eastern European folk designs and culture. For many years, during my numerous European trips, I serced and collected authentic designs from countries like Romania, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Russia, Ukraine, Republic of Moldova and Germany. I stylized the patterns (flovers and geometric figures) from women's bloses and skirts as well as men's shirts, jackets and pants. After that, I translated them into graphic designs, keeping, as much as possible, their original coloration. In this, my first volume, you will find only authentic designs from Romania. I dedicated this volume to my native country and to my fellow Romanians." "The book is an exciting overview of Romnian folk vocabulary placed in a useful format that will be inspirational and helpful to designers, crafts people and folk art enthusiasts. The author has done a great service for the entire international design community." Edward Seltzer Professor, Fashion Institute of Technology New York
