Writing became an unexpected hobby in 1998 when I began writing historical novels while recovering from a surgery ... 14 years later, I have 10 published novels, 3 Canadian Bestsellers and 2 IPPY Gold Medals. All of my books are available as eBooks from Kindle and Smashwords (all formats except Kindle).

Background Information

A native of Yorkshire, England, I'm the eldest son of ten siblings and they loved it when I told them my own brand of bedtime stories. I learned early in life to face challenges head on and was a real scrapper never turning down a fight if the cause was good enough. I've been in business since I was a six-year-old when I discovered I could easily turn knowledge into opportunity, utilizing this experience for my Lizzie Series. Later, as an expert in my field of mining engineering, I travelled internationally soaking up experiences and personalities I utilize in all my novels.

I spent 7 years working for a construction company in both the Australian desert and Perth before moving to Canada to work in the frozen north of Baffin Island and Winnipeg for a couple of years. From there I moved to Victoria, BC where I met my Canadian wife, Joyce Sandilands. As a child, I had an inborn love of history, and, in 1994 while recovering from surgery, discovered my talent for putting words together and wrote my first novel, Lizzie: Lethal Innocence. It became my first of 3 bestselling novels.

Joyce edits and publishes my books and is also the author of two chapter books with accompanying audio, in the "Moonbeam Series." She is also coauthor of our 2nd Gold Medal winning novel, Whispers Across Time, as well as Race For A Treasure and  Yesterdays.

By popular demand, Joyce and I also produced a CD of my mainly humorous personal life stories (in lieu of me writing a lengthy autobiography) entitled Laughing Through Life www.jrobertwhittle.com/books-audio/laughingcd

Accomplishments

2007 - Winner of a Gold Medal in the 2007 Independent Publisher Awards (IPPYs) for Best Fiction Regional Category: Canada-West for Robert's 3rd novel in Victoria Chronicles Trilogy, "Loyalty's Haven." Again in 2008, Robert and Joyce repeated this feat by earning Gold in the same category for "Whispers Across Time."

This all began back when I was in Grade School and I earned a set of Charles Dickens novels for my essay writing. Later I graduated from mining college at Leeds University becoming the youngest mining engineer in England's history. I played cricket in Northern England (becoming a rather infamous wicket keeper in the '60s for my daring style!)

Additional Information

I wrote 9 historical novels in 9 years and because I love history they are extremely true to historical fact. They include the 4-book Lizzie Series and the 3-book Victoria Chronicles. My readers tell me my novels are true family-friendly books. Also for these reasons, several of my novels have been required reading in schools, colleges, and university history classes (US/Canada/UK) and/or English Literature classes. I sell my books mainly at craft shows and outdoor markets in and around Victoria, BC Canada.
