Nik is a California native who spent his flower child days riding Harleys through the streets of San Francisco.

Background Information

I lived my first twenty years in the San Francisco East Bay area. At age eighteen, I purchased my first Harley Davidson, a 56' Panhead, eventually creating Cycletherapy, a Harley customizing and repair shop. Five years later, I closed the shop and went back to college to study art, experimenting with bronze and stone sculpture. Following that art sabbatical, I moved to The Sierra Nevada Mountains in 1974 and continued to create three-dimensional designs. During my first snowbound winter, I found myself surrounded by a collection of well-worn paperback novels. Without electricity or TV, I read and re-read recent fiction classics such as Steinbeck's "Mice and Men", Ken Kesey's "One flew over the cookoo's nest", Frank Herburt's "Dune", and Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land". Inspired by such greats, I revisited a childhood longing, picked up a pen and the seeds of a writing career emerged. It took another six years before I started my first novel, and twelve years to complete that project. Once I felt the success of completion, I dedicated more of my life as a novelist, getting up at 4 a.m. every morning to write. Using this method, the second novel took a year. My philosophy is simple. If I average only one page a day, in less than a year I'll have a finished book. The year goes by either way. To date, I have completed seven novels, with "Channeling Biker Bob" as the fourth, and first to be published. Though "Channeling Biker Bob" is fictional, I draw heavily from the experiences of those early days with Harley's as well as my personal thirty-year transformation into integrated masculinity. My incorrigible curiosity about the relational dance between men and women, I hope, adds humor and quirkiness to the storytelling. Finding equilibrium between the tough biker, while continuing to stay close to authentic masculine feeling, is a theme throughout "Channeling Biker Bob" and most of my current writings. I live with my wife, deep in the woods North of Nevada City, California. Though writing novels is my first love, I continue the romance with sculpture through the process of making gold and silver mini-sculptures that clients wear as jewelry.

Accomplishments

I have definitely graduated from the school of hard-knocks. My high school teachers would testify that my greatest achievement was surviving my rebellious teen years! I thank all those courageous, tenacious mentors that attempted to guide me through those early years, and I believe my greatest success has been in re-planting those fertile seeds in the next generation of angry, young men. It does indeed take a village to raise a child, maybe in the case of angry, young men and women, it takes a miracle as well.

Additional Information

I came of age in the 60's and 70's when the women's movement was demanding (and rightly so) that men listen and be sensitive to a woman's perspective. While many men continued to work out of their macho persona, those who saw that the feminists were breaking new ground for both men and women began to shift into a more 'user-friendly' model. Years later, I watched with confusion and pain as the lives of my male friends and myself were in shambles. Our women, enraged with our 'nice guys', with our inability to stand up to conflict, with the resentments that had built up over the years, left us behind in their own quest for an impassioned life and mate. This novel came to me after years of soul searching on my own, with other men consciously re-discovering an appropriate masculine model, and finally with men and women dedicated to honoring both the masculine and the feminine. Since my own view of life is definitely askew, I am more interested in the quirky humanity of people than in anything remotely politically correct. I wanted to tweak the reader’s perception of men, and especially bikers. Most of all, I wanted to write a compelling story that would remain with the reader long after he/she read the final page.
