Novelist, dancer, poet. Of Cherokee and Irish descent; an enrolled member of the Echota Cherokee Tribe of Alabama.

Background Information

I was born in Alabama and have spent most of my life writing about the people of this region, partcularly the stories inspired by my Native American relatives. The Native American experience and legacy in the Southeast is definitely its own unique story and one that continues to haunt and inspire me. I earned an MA in English from Mississippi State University and an MFA in Creative Writing from Georgia College and State University. Does any of that make me a writer? Heck no, but I sure had a lot of fun and met a lot of great people--and learned a thing or two along the way.I am currently teaching part-time at Calhoun Community College. Major influences...of course, I have to pay tribute to the men and women who have blazed the path for indigenous writers and stories--Sherman Alexie, Joy Harjo, Adrian C. Louis, Louise Erdrich, James Welch, Leslie Silko and so many others. Stephen Graham Jones is a new fave I've recently added to this list and if you haven't checked him out yet, do so! Other faves...Alice Walker, Amy Tan, Dick Lourie, Tony Moffeit, Flannery O'Connor, Walt Whitman, Arthur Rimbaud, Oscar Wilde, Charlotte Bronte,Michael Cunningham,Brady Udall, and a virtually endless list that goes on and on.

An epic novel about the Cherokee and Creek legacy in southern Tennessee, The Testament of Mattie-Jane, is currently represented by PMA Film and Literary Management in New York. I've just completed a second novel that is still currently being reviewed by my agency. Hopefully, if things continue to look good, both will be on a bookstore shelf near you sometime in 2008-09.

Other credits/awards include publications in "The American Indian Culture and Research Journal," "Bogg," "Black Bear Review," "Cedar Hill Review," "American Writing," and many others.

an NEA grant through the Mississippi Arts Council,
