I have always written, starting with poetry, short stories and finally non-fiction. I am an authority on the Weimar Republic and the Nazis and my second book won a prize for best historical biography. My third book was a light-hearted one about my local area, co-written with my wife Janet who also took most of the photos. My most recent book is a study of psychic warfare during World War Two.
Pope and Voznesensky are my favourite poets. I have won prizes for my translations. My favourite novelists are Dickens, Dostoievski and Caroline Glyn and my favourite dramatist is, of course, Shakespeare. I write history because I believe that unless we learn from the past we have no future.
