Friends and family call him Steve. Estebanpina is a nom de plume formed from his name and wife's name. A freelancer, Steve has been pounding laptop keys since 2001 and plans to do so for as long as it takes. Presently waiting for an agent to handle some of his manuscripts, he has a book for sale in the AD Bookstore and is working on another.

Background Information

Retired (not by choice) and working on short stories and novel since 2001. Formerly from NYC, moved to South Florida in 1973 and never looked back. Writing has always been my reason for living. In my youth I started out to become a commercial artist. While attending school I wrote stories and read them to classmates. My father was a longshoreman and inspiration for some of my stories. He had a passion for writing poetry in Spanish, a strange hobby for a dock worker. My mother was an aspiring artist and left many paintings for the family to enjoy. As a youth I worked on the school paper writing and cutting many of the stencils needed for printing. I also did the art work that included caricatures of teachers. A guidance counselor suggested I study commercial art. I soon realized the highly competitive field of art didn't offer immediate high enough income to support a family. I joined an export firm as a clerk typist and later copy writer. I used to write stories using a pencil and notebook which I later typed using an old portable typewriter. This is how it was done before computers. Thanks to technology, writing is a lot simpler today and research only a click away. I don't miss the library and pile of books used for research.

I've witnessed publishing morph over the years. It takes a sharp eye to keep abreast of the changes. I'm fully aware the competition is fierce. Writers proliferate daily by the thousands along with constantly evolving topics. Even if I don't sell one word, the challenge alone is worth the effort. I've already seen my work in print and enjoyed the event. I finished the book which after sending a query, the publisher said was too long (over 200,000 wds.) and suggested I break it down to form two or three stories. I'm presently revising three stories and sending queries to agents.

Birth Place
Santurce,  Puerto Rico

Between stories I managed to hack out a memoir which was published in a 2003 New York Magazine and a book titled FIVE UNUSUAL STORIES published by After that the only replies are rejection slips which inspire me more. In accordance with a publisher's suggestion I'm presently editing a story ten years in the making.
