Due to my political activity against the despotic monarchy and later the republican military regimes, I was arrested in 1954 when I was still at high school and was tried in a civilian court in Kirkuk. After the bloody military coup of February 8, 1963, I was arrested and tortured while studying painting at the University of Baghdad. I was detained for eight months and tried at the Fourth Military Tribunal in kirkuk. Due to these circumstances I was obliged to give up my studies at the university. In 1966, I was again detained and kept in solitary confinement during one week at the General Directorate of Security in Baghdad.
After graduating from high school in 1955, I worked in oil drilling in the province of Kirkuk. It was a one year positive experience that marked my life.
During the following years I worked as a teacher, journalist, graphic designer, calligrapher and translator in Baghdad until I left to Germany in 1968 where I earned my Ph.D. in journalism and political science from Universität Leipzig in 1997.
Later, I taught journalism and communication at the International Institute of Journalism in Berlin, Germany, at the University of Algiers, Algeria, and since 1984 to the present at the University of Costa Rica.
