Tawana is a poetess, publisher, and author of many works including poetry, short stories, and inspirational writings. She began her writing in high school, but upon entering Howard University she changed her major to Early Childhood Development, for which she now jokingly says, she majors in for life after becoming the mother of three. She credits her daughters who, through the many years of mothering and mentoring, helped to rekindle her desire to write again.
New to the literary world, Tawana’s writings became known to the public when she published her first book “Emotions” in December 2006, and even more widely known when some of her writings were printed in Essence Magazine. Her poetry has been quoted as being heartfelt, warm, and witty and as being provocative, thoughtful, and insightful. Her poetry reflects the realties of life, the emotions of women, and the beauty that radiates from women when they stand in their own strength and in the power of God.
It is those images that Tawana mirrors her publishing company, Black Butterfly Publishing, Inc (BBP). BBP’s primary purpose is to encourage and celebrate the bond between women, while supporting and applauding each individual woman’s uniqueness. By publishing books that appeal to each aspect of a woman’s nature, (emotional, physical, intellectual, maternal, and spiritual) BBP is able to help women become who they were created to be – creatures of faith, vessels of beauty, and pillars of great strength – women, knowledgeable, wise and victorious in every area of their lives.
Reaching toward that end, BBP delves into, looks at, and shares women’s deepest thoughts, their inner most heartfelt feelings, and their actual or seemingly realistic life experiences, offering ways for women to identify with each other’s thoughts, feelings, struggles, and successes, while inspiring the individual hopes and dreams of other women. BBP also looks to enhance the understanding of men who wish to relate to women in their lives, encouraging unity, building respect, and strengthening the love men have for all women.
Tawana is a member of Good Shepherd Baptist Church, the Black Writer’s Guild, MD – PG County Chapter; the Independent Book Publishers Association (PMA), former secretary to the Washington, DC chapter of the Top Teens of America, and Mary Kay Consultant.
