,J-M Rocard was born in Saïgon, Vietnam in 1930. He went to school in Paris, got his baccalauréat in 1949 and before completing his studies he went to Vietnam as a volunteer in the French Navy (1951-1953)

J-M Rocard received his doctorate of Physics from the Sorbonne in 1957. He then went to the University of British Columbia as a Postdoctoral Fellow (1958-1959). For 2 years he was a Research Fellow at the TI Resarch Laboratory (1959-1961, Dallas) (working on Caesium ion engines) and for the next 4 years a senior research scientist at the Litton Space Laboratory (Beverly Hills) (working in the field of Plasma physics). From 1965 to 1990 J-M Rocard has taught physics at the Université Paul Sabatier, Toulouse, France
