I woke up on the floor in the hallway crying. For the first time in years, the thought of more drinking was worse than the thought of getting sober. The poetry came later.

Background Information

In Buddhism there is talk of the realm of hungry ghosts, a world of beings whose cravings cannot be satisfied. I know this place well, having sought nirvana in drugs, sex, love, school, geography, and things. I was a social worker, politician, philosopher, alcoholic, pancake cook, carnival worker, Episcopalian, husband, father, and alcoholic. These are my stories.
