Saudi Arabia- who ever thought it could be fun!I certainly did when I worked there as a young , single blue-eyed blonde American nurse. I was a bold, adventurous risk taker. Broke all the rules, got away with it and met humble Saudis and partied with members of the Royal family. I also traveled to over 25 countries in my off time and had many romances and some heartache along the way. Single in Sa

Three years after leaving Saudi Arabia, I took a job as a private nurse in Bahrain, a tiny island 14 miles off the shores of Saudi Arabia. My one month assignment lasted for ten, and I had a lot of time on my hands as there were 8 servants in the house and a lot of family members tending to my terminally ill patient. The sights and sounds of the Arab world brought back a flood of memories and I started a memoir of my time in Saudi. I set it aside for years. After 9/11 I realized how little most people really knew about the Middle East, it's culture, religion and social morals. I am a feminist and had a hard time accepting the treatment of females in Saudi society and got to know many of the woman personally. Many had heart wrenching stories of arranged marriages, being second or third wives and often being held literal prisoners in their homes. As I said earlier, I was bold and adventurous. It was also the late 70's, a time ruled by drugs, sex and rock-n-roll.Everything that was happening in the U.S. was also happening in Saudi- just behind enclosed homes, compounds and veils. It was a wild and fun adventure, once I got past the culture shock. It was also a great time to take advantage of the generous vacation time as I was able to visit 25 different countries on most continents. Romance and many harmless flirtations were also abundant. I tried to incorporate some historical facts into the story, but most of all, I attempted to tell my story with a touch of both humor and pathos. I chose to write under a pen name- "Genia" as I was unsure how my book would be accepted by the radical Muslims who have been wreaking havoc on our world since 9/11. Enjoy "Single in Saudi"
