ABOUT WINSOME ANTOINETTE EBANKS
Winsome Antoinette Ebanks was born in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica West Indies. She grew up with her mother (Amanda Ebanks), father (Clinton Ebanks) and brothers Prince and Errol and Sisters Novelette and Sashana. Her mother was always busy taking care of the family and farming with her father. In addition, her father was a carpenter and mason and this made her live a fairly comfortable life. Despite the fact that Winsome lived with her parents her grand mother the late Willel Crowe (Sebel) was very influential on her life. She ever dreamt of following the loving caring path her grand mother travelled while she was alive.
Winsome attended Geneva Primary School in Newell, St. Elizabeth, and Jamaica West Indies and had many memorable experiences that helped to build her self-esteem and morals. After she finished Geneva Primary School she moved on to Newell Secondary School (now called Newell High School). She started to think seriously about life as she moved into Secondary School. In grade 8 she was elected as prefect and from that grade to tenth grade she was a prefect. During her early years at Newell Secondary School she participated in athletics and Netball competitions as well as Drama.
In 1993 Winsome was elected, as Head Girl and she also became a part of the schools’ quiz team. While she was Head Girl of Newell Secondary School she helped to organized a Fund Raising Concert in Aide of Painting the School. In that concert Winsome (Rainbow Talents) acted and sang. She received positive feedbacks and this further pushed her in singing and play writing.
She was one of the first students at Newell Secondary School to take and pass Subjects in the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) while attending that School. Newell Secondary unlike the traditional High Schools did not offer subjects in Caribbean Examination Council. (CXC) and General Certificate Education (GCE) internally- they offered only Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Jamaica School certificate (JSC) and therefore she had to enter through a private Centre.
When Winsome graduated from Newell High school she went to evening classes at St. Elizabeth Technical High School Evening Institute in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica West Indies and did GCE O’ level Human and Social Biology and she was successful. In addition, she re-took two of the CXC subjects that she did while she was at Newell in order to get a better grade and was successful. This was just the start of her days of studying. While she was going to High school and evening classes she wrote a number of poems under the influence of her neighbour and childhood friends Ruby Campbell (Mor) and Tornado Gooden (Superman). In addition, she also helped to write plays for her local church, which was, perform at surrounding churches. These received high praise form those who had the pleasure of seeing them.
Tornado Gooden was very good at acting and he helped to draw Winsome into play and skit writing, which she still practices. In addition, Tornado’s influence was so strong on Winsome (Rainbow Talents) that she also helped to write plays for her local church, which was, perform at surrounding churches. These received high praises from those who had the pleasure of seeing them.
Winsome’s (Rainbow Talents) father Clinton Ebanks was very fascinating with singing and song writing and she also became a part of that. In 1994 she started attending Church Teachers’ College in Mandeville, Manchester Jamaica W.I. This was she began to move her poems to a higher level. During her years at college she won two silver awards at the Parish finals of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s Speech and Drama Competition. In 1996 she got a silver medal for an original dub poetry entitled “Meh Ah Goh Tell Yuh Bout Jesus” and in 1997 she got another silver medal at the parish level for another original dub poem entitled “Love Once Lost”.
After leaving Church Teachers’ College in Mandeville, Jamaica West Indies She taught at several Schools in St. Elizabeth such as Black River High, Barbary Hall Primary, Tranquillity Bay Rehabilitation Centre and Lacovia High School. While on her second term at Lacovia High she decided to take a step towards University Education. In January 2000 she started attending Northern Caribbean University, in Mandeville, Manchester Jamaica West Indies. This was a turning point in her life as she was to meet people who would influence her to move on to an even higher level of poetry and play writing. Christopher Samuels, Garth Robinson and Lorna Mullings and Gregory Brown and Gregory Fullerton were among some of the students who influence Winsome to move on to a new level of Poetry. It was under the influence of Gregory Brown and Christopher Samuels in Northern Caribbean University Library that she discovered Poetry.com in 2001. In addition, encouragement of staff at the University such as Mrs. Lynette Wilson, Mr. Steve Bailey who was her senior at College and Mr. Paul Mears her Biology also motivated her to enter the Open Poetry Competition on Poetry.com.
When Winsome( Rainbow Talents) realized that poetry.com had competitions for people like herself, she entered two of her poems (“Peace of mind” and “Love Once Lost”) in the International Open Poetry Competition in 2001. Both poems went to the final of the competition. She continued writing poems in her leisure time at University. After graduating from Northern Caribbean University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education she decided to concentrate on compiling some of her poems in a book.
