My first novel, ACROSS THE SWEET GRASS HILLS, won the 2002 Willa Award for Paperback Fiction. It was also a quarter finalist in the Chesterfield Film Project.

Background Information

Several of my children's stories were included in anthologies published by Tyndale. As stated earlier, my first novel, ACROSS THE SWEET GRASS HILLS, was WINNER OF THE 2002 WILLA AWARD for Best Softcover Fiction, from Women Writing the West. The romantic historical is set against the little-known Montana Marias Massacre of 1870 where 173 Pikuni Blackfeet were murdered on a cold, bitter blue dawn.

I enjoy writing a local history column and I contribute to NPR/Jefferson Public Radio's local history program, "As It Was," which features anecdotes about people and events in the State of Jefferson (check it out -- it still "exists!"). I'm also working on screenplays now, as well as another novel.

I have four published books, including one novel and three nonfiction books, many published articles and stories. Several pieces have placed as Finalists in writing contests, including: The Jack London Novel Contest, The William Faulkner Short Story Contest, The NWA Novel Contest, The Chesterfield Film Project Contest, The Writer's Network International Fiction and Screenplay Contest, The FADE IN Screenplay Contest, The Florida First Coast Novel Contest, the Acclaim Film and TV Contest, the Contest, and most recently, the Blue Cat Screenplay Contest.

Additional Information

My second book (co-authored with Monica Hall), is an anecdotal history -- entitled WESTERN SISKIYOU COUNTY, CALIFORNIA: GOLD AND DREAMS. It was released in December 2002, as part of Arcadia Publishing's Making of America History Series. Also under consideration is a screenplay which placed as a finalist in the Acclaim Film and TV Contest. I am completing a fictionalized biography of Black Bart, California's most infamous and fascinating stage bandit. I was the 2004 President of Women Writing the West, a great writing organization for those interested in bringing women's stories set in the West (historical, contemporary, fictional, non-fiction, etc...). For more about WWW, check out: In 2006, I coauthored a local/regional history book, IMAGES OF THE STATE OF JEFFERSON, with Bernita Tickner, for Arcadia Publishing. In 2007, we wrote and sold a second volume, THE STATE OF JEFFERSON: THEN & NOW, to Arcadia Publishing. Both books have received great reviews. Full of historical photos, some from private collections, they provide a survey of the "mythical" but independent State of Jefferson, the borderlands of Oregon and California. Visit my website: or one of my BLOGS, on, or at It may be controversial, but I am committed to getting factual information out about rural issues as well as information about beef and cattle and ranching.
