Late-blooming novelist, essayist, becoming an age activist because I can't seem to help myself.

Background Information

I'm an erstwhile teacher (high school), perennial reader and writer, but only the last 20 years or so for publication. Retirement and a computer made it possible. Now I'm in a hurry. Too much to try to get out there, and not too much time in which to do it. I'm a board member of a small arts foundation, volunteer in several capacities in the retirement community where we live, and becoming daily more convinced that "senior" is an unnecessarily limiting term. Take a look at the number of blogs and websites belonging to writers no longer in the flush of youth. Try keywords like "aging" and "writer's life."

My biggest single influence was doubtless my high school English teacher, a man of incredible talent as a teacher. What I know about composition I learned in his classroom. But he had the foundation of my grandmother and my father to build on, so they have to be included. After that--reading and reading and reading.

Accomplishments

Not much in the awards department: winner of an essay contest sponsored by the Connecticut Writers League, honorable mention in a Writers Digest short story contest, a couple of other second place awards in contests run by small magazines. 2008 Gold Medal in North Carolina Senior Games (for a short story). I was certified as a secondary teacher of English in Connecticut, missed my MS in Ed. by retiring from teaching before I'd finished the last 3 hours. One year I was voted best trustee of a library in Connecticut. I guess the greatest accomplishment of my life is the successful lives of our children, and the impressive early accomplishments of their children. I've published a number of short stories in both commercial and literary markets, but the last was a number of years ago. I have two novels in print, SETTLING and MAIDEN RUN, also available as e-books, a second novel MAIDEN RUN available as soft cover books. I write monthly for Senior Women Web, an online magazine covering a broad spectrum of subjects of interest to a lot more people than just older women. Lately I've revived an interest in poetry, both reading and writing, and have had my third novel edited professionally, much to its advantage. Now if I could just find a publisher ready to take on a literary novel!

In the passt year, I've had poems appear on The Lowestoft Chronicle website, The Wild Goose Poetry Review, Red Poppy Review, and a another is in a new anthology coming out in spring, 2012 in print from Jacar Press.

In 2010 my collections of short stories called Peripheral Vision was released by March Street Press (softcover print).
