Statitistics show that child abuse in Botswana is on the increase. Despite the increase, a lot of cases still go unreported. in most cases, parents and society still don't understand what constitutes child abuse. Through out my life i have worked with children. As a Nurse, as Midwife and as a Psychological Counsellor, I have been involved with children from all walks of life, rural and urban.
Society tends to underestimate or disregard the emotional impact of child abuse. in some cases, verbal abuse is still considered normal, e.g name calling, and degradory remarks. They are unaware how such remarks seriously dent a child's self image, self concept and how it cotributes to lack of self acceptance.
My mission is to use my books to raise conscioussness about child abuse , put it in African context and to help people to develop proper parenting skills.
I would also like to reach out to schools, through poetry evenings and contests to help children understand thier situations better and to know where and how to get help.
