I attended a public Latin school in Baltimore years ago and got interested in writers as diverse as Steinbeck and the local H. L. Mencken, who almost came to my class. Took a try at a short story contest then in a magazine Mencken and Ogden Nash contributed to—and won—so that put me on the path to writing.
My father's family were from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, and I visited an uncle's working farm twice a year for many years. I had 48 great-aunts and -uncles there when I was young, and I knew all of them. It was like stepping back into the 19th century.
Then my step-grandmother from my mother's side moved to Tidewater Virginia, a very different kind of place, and I met her brother-in-law, an ancient blacksmith who had been in the Spanish-American War. So I was back in the 19th century again. This experience led me to write the novel, "The Smithy Miracles," which won the Indy award and a number of others. I still love that book.

I'm working on a prequel and queried quite a few agents, but at present I'm thinking of submitting "Smithy" to a major publisher.
