Background Information


A life time resident of  Plymouth, MA., Mike was a performance poet, a percussionist and drummer, who did lyrical, rhythm-based tomes attuned to the social and semi-political. Multiracial with indigenous blood, he loved his American life, but not is schizophrenic essence.

 He was diagnosed at the age of 13 with kidney dis-ease, he began hemodialysis at the age of 25 for two and a half years, he then received a transplant that failed, in 2003 he began PD a daily home dialysis treatment until his passing in January of 2009.

Established two poetry venues in his home town of Plymouth, MA, Poetry Showcase a yearly venue in conjunction with the Annual Art Show at the Plymouth Guild for the Arts and POETRY:The Art of Words a monthly reading and open-mic, both venues are still currently operating. This series is now know as POETRY:The Art of Words/Mike Amado Memorial Series

Nominated in 2008 for Pushcart Award

Awarded an Arty by Plymouth Cultural Council in 2009 for lifetime achievement

Additional Information

Mike left over 800 unpublished poems at the time of his passing for this earth. Jack Scully, his literary executor and Nancy Brady Cunningham have recently edited some of this poems into his fourth book of poetry, "The Book of Arrows" soon to be published.
