Background

Nily Naiman was born in Israel in December of 1953. She was the elder of two sisters in a hard working family that had arrived there after the defeat of the Third Reich. Nily grew up in a time of constant war and political and cultural upheaval in a narrow-minded society of Holocaust survivors and new Jewish immigrants who had come from all over the world.
She struggled throughout her childhood for her independence and freedom of thought and speech in a very judgmental and rule-set environment. On the background of the many conflicts within the Jewish community, the horrors of the Holocaust, and Arab-Israeli conflict, Nily has been seeking to portray the common, fundamental elements of humanity and the soul, good and evil, war and peace, love and hate, and trauma.
Her novels are fascinating journeys of women and their families searching for indentity while enduring desperate and painful times. The women in her books are larger than life, and their stories are all based on true events and on the life of the author. Naiman is dealing with emotional problems which have scarred these women very deeply.
Culture and personal history aside, these are women who have the ability to cope and the strength that makes it possible to face their problems and their pain. Naiman intertwines tragedy with irony and romance in an impressive way. All the women in her books are on the verge of destruction and disaster. The situations of despair, embarrassment, and pain that she creates have a deep emotional quality. The personal and subjective foundations control the plot. The heroines of her novels seem to bear the weight ot the entire world on their shoulders.
Naiman's aim is not really to understand the circumstances and social situations, so much as it is to understand the characters' emotional world, their personal thoughts and feelings. The lyrical effect is very clear in all the books. All her stories include her autobiographical events and personal experiences that are presented to artistic perfection. All the women that Naiman deals with are living within a cruel reality and a dark period of history. They try to preserve whatever human dignity they have.
Do not expect any great social messages or bombastic prophecies. Her books are all a salute to human love that is greater than hatred or death.
