Peter S. Horvitz and his son Joachim co-authored The Big Book of Jewish Baseball. It was published in 2001 by SPI Books, New York and has been hailed by numerous readers as the standard work on the subject.

Background Information

Peter has published over two hundred articles in various magazines and journals. The majority of these have dealt with baseball, Judaica, and numismatics. Among the odd corners of history he has explored are the lives of Ivan Shishman, the Jewish tsar of Bulgaria, and Prince Iturbide, the last claimant to the throne of Mexico. On two occasions, Peter has been awarded national prizes in recognition of his writing. Peter is an avid collector of Jewish sport memorabilia. His collection includes many of the items illustrated in this book, as well as books from Moe Berg’s library, game used bats of a number of Jewish players, and the autographs of the great majority of the players written about in this volume.

Birth Place
Philadelphia, PA USA

Peter S. Horvitz was born and has lived much of his life in Philadelphia. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. He also holds degrees from Temple and Drexel Universities. He has recently retired from his position with the Philadelphia School District after thirty years as an English teacher and Chairman of the English Department at Olney High School.
Peter has traveled widely in Europe, Israel, the United States, and Mexico. It was during a running of the famous horse race, the Palio, held every year in the Italian city of Sienna, that he met his wife, Michele. They have two children. The younger, Desiree, is a student at Brandeis University. The elder, Joachim, is the co-author of this book.

Additional Information

The Big Book of Jewish Baseball covers everything, from tragic moments such as Herb Gorman dying on the ball field, and Erskine Meyer quitting the sport after finding out about his teammates (on the 1919 White Sox) taking bribes, to happier occasions such as Koufax's perfect game as well as Larry Sherry successfully concluding every Dodger victory of the 1959 World Series. Jews who impacted upon the great American pastime extend far beyond the record homeruns and strikeouts of the legendary slugger "Hammerin' Hank" Greenberg and pitching ace Sandy Koufax. There are scores of lesser known ballplayers like Lipman Pike (the first professional Jewish player), Cal Abrams (who shielded Jackie Robinson with his body), and Ron Blomberg (who stood in as the very first Designated Hitter), whose baseball stories will touch or amuse readers of any background. The Big Book of Jewish Baseball explores all facets of baseball, including: Minor League players, Umpires, Jewish League Officials and Club Executives. It even includes a 2001 Major League update, as well as 200 B&W photographs. This book is a must for anyone interested in the game. Also included are full player stats, unusual memorabilia, exclusive original interviews, and rare photos of players on & off the field. This one-of-a-kind book will be much appreciated by both baseball aficionados as well as readers of popular Judaica. In addition, the authors convey so much about the lives of the players, not just their baseball careers, some great transcendent moments both in baseball and American history come alive for readers.
