From the age of four, when I hadn't quite learned my ABCs, I picked up books and pretended to read. Yet as much as I loved books, it never occured to me that I wanted to be a writer. My neice, who happens to be the same age as I am, told me she would be a writer when she grew up. I remember feeling a pang of longing as if I wanted that desire, but couldn't have it.
