My writing career began at The Knoxville Journal, a morning daily where I landed a job as a reporter while a student at Tennessee. After an interruption for service as an Air Force intelligence officer in the Korean War, I moved back home to Nashville and was hired as a reporter for The Nashville Banner. I preferred feature articles to straight news and followed that flair to write nonfiction for national magazines like Coronet , The American Legion Magazine and The Rotarian .
