The Shadow

This poem is about the shadow, that part of ourselves that we deny and hide even from ourselves.

Who are you?

this darkness I am feeling within

and how have you gotten there?

Perhaps I put you there

with my lies and betrayals

the ugly guises of my everyday life

Perhaps you found your way

when I was not looking

too busy with the gluttony of my existence

filling my empty soul

with trophies of gold and scrap metal

guns and cheeseburgers

Or did you come in disguise

showing your face as love

only later to reveal the truth

hidden beneath the mask of deceit

Go away! I shout

it only cries louder

too loud now to pretend I don’t hear

I want to know

I must know

or I will die of the fright alone

So I look inside

and there I see

that no one has put a devil in my soul

for it isn’t a devil after all

it is an angel,

lying so deep beneath my fear

I could not recognize her

Now I see her

Now I remember her...

The only one I ever knew

She is me

          and she is beautiful
