This is a rewrite and dedicated to the memory of Edgar Allen Poe.

I came upon a barren field
with iron bars around its girth.
Atop the gate of rust and steel,
an evil bird sat on his perch.

This darkened shadow, black as coal,
with shallow piercing amber eyes,
cast his lot onto my soul
and flew off into ebon skies.

I'm told a specter of this worth,
appears within life's final breath
of he who will abandon earth,
precisely at his hour of death.

Vile apparition, gone away,
was but your presence meant for me?
Accept my pardons, this I pray,
release me from eternity.

Dawn breaks arises in the east,
darkness fades amid my scream,
visions of that feathered beast
was nothing but a passing dream.

Paul,
You write eerie so well. Some vivid descriptions in this poem. The gate reminds me of Poe, but also of another scare King...Stephen King, that is. His house in Maine has a spooky gate. (I think his has gargoyles.) I like how you showed the very real fear of this character, too. Love and Hugs,
Sheila

I like Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven. This reminds me of the movie The Raven where the raven brings back a wrongly killed rock and roll singer to exact vengeanace on those who killed him and his fiancče. Stark images are all through this and makes a person shudder at the thought that a single common bird can be the harbinger of death. Thank you for sharing.

May the Lord Bless you, and those whom you love, and be with you always, and walk by your side. With love in my heart, joy to the world, peace on earth, & ((((((((((MANY WONDERFUL SISTERLY HUGGGGSSSS)))))))))), your den sister Barbie
