by Joel Sattler

somewhere in Kansas at some intersection
flat as a pancake in every direction
the sun going down in a big empty sky
the sounds of the prairie beginning to die

a bum was standing the side of the road
shivring in the wind that was cutting and cold
he stuck out his thumb as I tried to drive by
but I had to stop when I looked in his eyes

I opened the door and I said have a seat
he buckled his belt and my heart skipped a beat
I knew I had seen him somewhere from before
but it couldn't be true and I couldn't be sure

as we drove along with the sun in a race
I just kept on looking the side of his face
and the world got darker and darker and dark
and the night sky filled up with ten billion sparks

I said don't I know you haven't we met
you've the kind of a face that no one could forget
and he smiled at me least I think that he did
maybe it was pain in his face that he hid

he said don't know how long I been on the road
the last ride I got was a man named Tom Joad
and the first ride I got was from Jesus he said
the man who done gone raised me up from the dead

but I had to laugh when I heard all these words
guess he was crazy it was so absurd
I asked him his name and he said Lazarus
so I stopped the next town put him on the bus

as I drove away he waved from the rear glass
and I did wave back as the greyhound I passed
I looked in the window it was just as I feared
the crazy old coot had just gone disappeared

if you don't believe me then I don't blame you
it sounds quite suspicious even to me too
but miracles happen most every day
and I rather believe them than not anyway

maybe the hitchhiker's no more than a ghost
but even if so he is more real than most
but I'm telling the truth I aint telling no lies
he may be a ghost but may be so am I

Joel, love this one, I visualized the whole story it tells while reading.
