I Hear a Shawnee Song

This was Shawnee land
This was once their home
They were decent men
Ohio is where they roamed

As I look into the night
My feelings are so strong
The Shawnee are out of sight
And perhaps I might be wrong

I feel something’s in the air
On nights before it’s dawn
An event that happens rare
When the right wind comes along
I hear a Shawnee song

Ohio once had game
Ohio once was wild
But it'll never be the same
Wilderness went out of style

The White man had to come
The Red man had to go
Battles there were some
It all happened so long ago

But I feel something’s in the air
Some nights before its dawn
Its gone and then its there
When the right wind comes along
I hear a Shawnee song

The Shawnee spirits flow
They glide along the wind
In the night they come and go
You hear them now and then

If you look up at the stars
At night when it grows dark
If Ohio is where you are
You can feel the Shawnee hearts

Yes I feel something’s in the air
Some nights before its dawn
Like an native ancient prayer
When the right wind comes along
I hear a Shawnee song

The Shawnee spirits flow
They glide along the wind
In the night they come and go
You hear them now and then

I hear those ancient spirits too, when I wander the great Northwood or the vast Southwest.

Of course the spirit lingers, Paul, the lasting song of those who suffered injustice.
I like the simple, direct expression and the essential repetitions.
