The Ship
by Silvia Hartmann

Thursday, May 10, 2007
Rated "G" by the Author.

Lands across the oceans,
they await; the sailors
dream and sleep, rocked by
the swell and voices of the watch;
by night wind in the sails
and the soothing sounds of
wood, our ship, it works
with wind and tide
to bring us safely
to the lands
across the oceans.

We dream and drift
and nothing seems to be revealed;
the days are marked
in winds and rains,
in suns and storms,
in nights of glory
and in mists of silver white,
mysterious and challenging:

Close your eyes,
just listen,
and extend your senses
far and wide,
and feel for the leviathan
ahead and to the right,
he will not cross our bow
nor bar our passing
with his sweeping trails
but he salutes us,
quietly, and from afar.

Our journey seems to be forever,
our journey seems to be the only life,
a world of wood
and comrades strong and weak,
of bells that call us to our duties,
of rest and play, of sleep and dreams
and this we thought was all the world,
there could be nothing
left beside.

And yet, the day it came
when cries went up
when everybody rushed as one
to stand and stare with burning eyes
and to discern the first and finest line
of land appearing at the far horizons;
we might be wrong,
we might be wanting change so much
that gently and with grace,
our eyes will show us things
just so we cry no more;
and yet these thoughts
are common to the weary ones,
the ones who made their home
here on this journey;
the land at the horizon
it lies so steady,
blue and misty,
far away,
and yet,
it is.

It grows, it widens,
it becomes a land
of unknown riches, unknown treasures,
unknown challenges abound;
of course, there's always those
who are afraid and would prefer
the journey to continue
just as it was,
with bells that call to work
and sleep and everyone
just there and always
yet we know fair well
that is no life.

Our destiny awaits on those wild shores,
those sandy coves and then beyond,
those deep green forests,
emerald and luscious, full of life,
and full of danger too,
and yet who knows
what we will find?

Be ready, be aware
and move in speed and high delight,
for we were born to run with tigers,
to make love and eat the fruits
that ooze with life and such delight,
to roam and search,
to find and smile,
the ship was not the world,
it was what brought us here,
to this,
our true beginnings.

Billowy sails propel us to look deep inside our Dreams...name our journeys and water our camraderie with one another, Silvia...I've missed you...The Ship commences at the navigation by the stars and we focus on the skies, Draco, The Southern Cross, The Milky Way, and the peoples...Europeans, Africans, Native Americans, pilgrims, pathfinders, kinship links, and other points of Light find our destinies that await on those wild shores...be well, Silvia...Blessed Be.

Sounds like the journey of life. Nicely written with good imagery. I was swept off by the sails.
